Best Print Settings for Small Decorative Models

6 min read • Published 2026-09-10 • Updated 2026-09-20

Small decorative models fail differently than big functional ones: stringing shows, seams scar faces, and tiny features overheat. The fix is not more infill — it is walls, seams, and cooling.

These are good starting settings for ornaments, mini pots, and figurines under 80 mm tall.

Walls over infill

For small models, use 3 walls and only 10–12% infill. Three 0.45 mm walls create a 1.35 mm solid shell that makes minis feel premium and survive drops, while extra infill just adds time and heat.

Thin-walled minis (vases, tiny pots) do even better with 0.16 mm layers and 3 walls — the shell becomes effectively solid without the weight.

Hide the seam

The Z-seam is the vertical scar where each layer starts. On cute models it lands on faces by default and ruins photos. Set seam position to 'back' or paint it manually along the least-visible edge — behind the ear, under the chin, along the back ridge.

Scarf seams (available in Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer) feather the seam into the wall and nearly disappear on matte filament. Enable them for display pieces.

Cool small layers

Layers under 10 seconds do not cool before the next hot layer lands, causing melted faces and blobby eyes. Set a minimum layer time of 8–10 seconds so the slicer automatically slows down on tiny sections.

Printing two copies at once is the classic trick — while the nozzle prints copy B, copy A cools. For single minis, a 10 mm prime tower serves the same purpose.

Speeds that flatter details

Outer walls at 60–100 mm/s with 0.16 mm layers produce visibly smoother curves than 200 mm/s at 0.20 mm, for only a modest time penalty on small parts. Inner walls and infill can stay fast — only the visible outer wall needs to slow down.

First layer at 30–50 mm/s on a clean plate gives the glass-smooth bottom that makes mini pots look ceramic.

Quick Checklist

  • 3 walls, 10–12% infill for minis
  • Paint the seam to the back edge or enable scarf seams
  • Minimum layer time 8–10 seconds
  • Outer walls 60–100 mm/s at 0.16 mm for display pieces

Small models reward finesse over brute force. Three walls, a hidden seam, patient cooling, and gentle outer speeds turn a 40-gram mini pot into something that looks store-bought — try these settings on the Succulent Pot Trio and see the difference.
